When Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe founded the Marbella Club in the 1950s, he created more than a hotel. He created a way of life — a place where royalty, entrepreneurs, artists and international families could live in privacy, surrounded by gardens, architecture and the light of the Mediterranean.
A few years later, Puerto Banús opened, giving the town an international stage by the sea. La Serena draws inspiration from classical Andalusian architecture, expressed with an international elegance reminiscent of the Mediterranean's most iconic private residences.
The generous arches. The dark timber pergolas. The hand-forged railings. The carefully balanced symmetry. The warm natural stone. The pale rendered walls.
There is no excess here. Only balance. This is architecture that does not follow trends; it outlives them.
Chapter Five
Under the pergola
Morning begins here. Sunlight filters through the grapevines. Shadows move slowly across the stone terrace. The scent of jasmine, citrus and the Mediterranean fills the air.
Coffee is rarely enjoyed indoors. The children wake slowly. Someone takes the first swim of the day. Someone else opens the first book. No one looks at the clock — there is simply no reason to.

Where life happens

Olive, marble, fluted oak
A working kitchen dressed as a drawing room: veined marble surrounds, olive-green cabinetry, an island in fluted oak.
It is a room for late lunches that become evenings, where the doors stay open to the terrace and the cooking happens in company.

The garden
Some gardens are planted. Others are allowed to mature. La Serena feels as though it has always belonged here.
The grapevines climb across the pergolas, just as they have throughout the Mediterranean for generations. Bougainvillea brings colour to the white walls. The palms move gently in the sea breeze. The evening sun passes through the foliage, casting a living pattern of light and shadow across the terraces.
These are the details that cannot be drawn onto an architectural plan. They require time. And that is precisely why they cannot be replicated.
